They aren’t necessarily stealing it from you. But they are taking up residence. Also they have rights bc the govt rather owners help with the homeless problem than actually do anything about it smh

Lawyer here: squatters rights exist as a public policy to avoid housing waste. The idea is that it is better to endow ownership rights on someone willing to maintain and upkeep a property as opposed to letting the property waste or possibly using public funding to remove a public hazard. Every state has its own length of time someone has to openly, notoriously, and adversely possess the property, ranging from 5-20 years typically.

Tenants rights and squatters rights should not be the same . No one should be able to lay claim to another person s property just because it's not occupied at that time .
