I’ve been agonizing over whether to give my son ADHD medication for months. I knew that it helps me so much but I didn’t want to start him on it at 8 years old. After increasing volatile behavior and emotions we decided to give him medication. I gave it to him this morning before school but didn’t tell him what it was for.

He came over after school and said that his brain felt quiet and calm all morning and he really liked that feeling. That’s exactly how my brain feels when I take medication. It looks like we made the right choice for now.

Can I ask why you felt hesitant to start based on his age? Not trying to start a debate, but it sounds like you have firsthand experience with the benefits of medication. Why would you want to delay that for your child?

As a teacher I can remember a kid( on medication) reporting “those tablets make my ears work”😳

As someone who had door after door close and opportunity after opportunity taken from me, year after year as my parents refused to have me tested or medicated….as a late diagnosed and medicated adult who desperately wished she had the tools she needed as a child to help quiet her mind…and as a teacher who worked way harder than she had to to merely finish reading a text or two, and who now sees students that simply can’t as opposed to won’t….I thank you. Deeply.

It worked in one day? Wow. I didn’t know they worked that fast. Are you willing to say which drug it was?

I showed symptoms as young as 5 and wasn't medicated until 16. Thank you for listening to your child's needs 😭

I WISH I could show this to a parent of a kid in my class. We did ADHD training yesterday and there was a video about it describing symptoms- I could see this student in every single one of the behaviours. It was like someone made a documentary about him. He’s a good kid but has no friends because he’s all over the place and gets angry so easily because no one understands him. Mum will not accept that he has a problem.

As someone who grew up with untreated ADHD thank you for doing what is right for him. If any other parents are reading this please consider your doctors advice if they suggest medication. When I look back at my school years I wish badly that I had the type of help I needed. Was a ‘gifted’ child failing my honors classes bc my brain just doesn’t work like other peoples

You should give the school nurse a heads up in case of issues like side effects. You’re not wrong to start him on the meds but I would tell him. I bet he likes how his brain felt.

We need to stop fearing medicinal help. May take time to find the right fit but it helps. My parents didn't want me on pills so they pumped me full of soda cause caffeine is calming for add+adhd. How was that healthier or better idk.
