Shop online then. Like they’re doing their job tryna be nice and you’re an ass to them. And yes a clerk or cashier can tell when you’re being an ass. It cost nothing to be nice back. And saying “no thank you” isn’t as respectful and nice as you think

And no thank you is very polite especially in a customer service setting. The employee is the one who initiated the "would you like me to stop talking" if it was the other way around then yeah it would have been rude. But declining something offered isnt rude in a retail setting anymore than declining samples is rude.
