I've heard CBT (cognitive behavioral therapy) doesn't work well for AuDHD people. Although I'm not even sure what CBT is. Has any of my autistic peeps found a therapy model that works best for them?

So CBT is focused on reorienting your thinking away from negative patterns. Which doesn't necessarily fit autistic thinking patterns well. I had some good results with both DBT and parts therapy. DBT has some sensory aspects that I found particulary helpful, although I had to adjust it to my particular needs.

CBT was traumatic for me and caused me so much shame. I have found somatic based therapies to be most helpful for me. EMDR, Brainspotting, and Somatic IFS (parts work)

I wonder if EMDR would work for me, I have SDAM (Severely Deficient Autobiographical Memory) aka, I don't really for episodic memories.

(Late dx AuDHD) I'd been in talk therapy for years and never found it helpful because I always came to the same conclusion as the therapist & have already worked out everything they could have said. I was basically paying someone to talk to myself. EMDR, on the hand has been incredible for allowing me to actually process my spicy memories and feelings & work through them, instead of intellectualize them incessantly. Would recommend. 💯 *I've also done stress tolerance & DBT which I found helpful

I’ve had far more success with coaching and mentorship than I have therapy. So much that I’m now one myself.

Not autistic but have found that traditional talk therapy doesn’t take into account experience and trauma often and I feel it only goes so far. Years of talk therapy didn’t help. When I finally got with a therapist that was trauma informed and was able to focus on mindfulness and therapy, that’s were I saw change in my lfie

I failed CBT. However, I did well with psychodynamic and DBT.

DBT has helped me immensely. CBT was terrible, and EMDR was amazing but not covered by my insurance.

I am AuDHD too. After spending years in counselling and having so many different counsellors I'm starting to think that I'm just hard to work with. My last therapist was actually the first to tell me explicitly what CBT technique she'd be using. Whereas I love that part where the rationales of her approach were explained, for the majority of therapy I felt unseen and unheard. I didn't feel CBT was working because I have no questions about my own ability to second guess myself😂

I found the ritualistic nature of DBT to be great for my day-to-day issues. EMDR was a literal lifesaver in regards to my less frequent, but more serious episodic type issues. Highly recommend both.
