For the last 4:30-on-a-Sunday-morning Medthreads post of 2024, let’s talk about money in medicine, given everything that’s happened in the last couple of weeks I’ve been a doctor for 23 years, and here’s six things I’ve learned while operating in the American medical system (with references!) The last one’s going to ruffle some feathers ↓

1. 62% of bankruptcy in the US is attributable to medical bills That’s right. Two-thirds of all bankruptcy cases are due to people trying to pay for their medical bills. I’m not making this up: http://pnhp.org/new_bankruptcy_study/Bankruptcy-2009.pdf ↓

Why have Americans allowed this to happen? It really tells you big business is in control of everything in USA. This fear of so called socialism which seems to mean communism to Americans is a narrative of fear constructed by capitalists who want to make maximum profit. Always this rant about taxes. I'm happy to pay tax if it provides a good public health system, good schools, roads, pharmaceuticals at very subsidised cost, good social security etc. in other words looks after its citizens.

Mark Cuban has a project worth your time and knowledge. It started with Cost Plus Drugs and is expanding into other areas of healthcare in this country.

27 years working in healthcare and I would not recommend the field to anyone. Ever.

All very good points. I think that having and spreading this knowledge is important for decision making and planning. But how do we, the ‘common people’, fix this? Writing to unresponsive and uncaring (read: paid by the culprits) elected representatives may make us feel good because we ‘did our part’ is a start. Now what? Keep writing for another 4, 6, 10 years and hope something changes? Sit back and wait for the system to completely crash? Not rhetorical I genuinely want to know what to do

Well said! This 2013 article from Time is an informatively excellent read and I highly recommend it to get a better understanding of the colossal monstrosity health care “insurance” is. https://time.com/198/bitter-pill-why-medical-bills-are-killing-us/
