I didn’t understand this until I heard a black student talking about how horrific it was to be made to read it. I removed it from our curriculum, as it was being taught at KS3. I’m white: I don’t get to say what’s racist and what’s not so I listen to people who do.

We don't learn by simply erasing the mistakes of the past, we learn by confronting them and changing our attitudes.

I don’t accept that the text itself is racist, but there is a strong case for choosing texts at KS3 that is more empowering and recognisable for black teenagers.

KS3 is too early. Even at KS4 the themes have to be introduced carefully.

This. I remember getting a detention because I (a white person) refused to say the words

If you hide the darker side of history then you are allowing history to repeat itself.

I found that being "made to" read Shakespeare was horrific but my generation were not given the choice to ignore things they didn't like. What do you ban next ? Schindlers List ? Cry Freedom ? Slippery slope

How does 'to kill a mockingbird' go down? I read 'of mice and men' at school and it set me on a path of reading that I've kept up today. I'm 65. I recently listened to an audible version of it. I'll have to do it again. I'm white, so maybe I'm not sensitive to what's upsetting to some. I will say that the book was written of the times, in the times, like all Steinbeck books. I can't see what's gained by hiding how things were and seeing that things are getting better myself, but what do I know.

I saw that on Wales Today too. I don't have an issue with it being removed for that reason. Tbh I've long thought my kids learning American literature such as 'Of mice and men' at GCSE or 'A Streetcar named Desire' or 'Handmaid's Tale' at A Level was a little odd - there's plenty of British literature that's equally as good.
