A few years ago I started working on a story I wanted to be my first book- a paranormal thriller based on experiences I’ve had as a paranormal investigator and teacher. When my mom heard about it, her only response was “who the hell would want to read that?” I didn’t write again until a few weeks ago. The reason I started writing again was because I’ve been NC with her for almost a year and my therapist said I should get back into things that made me happy. I’m hoping to have it finished soon. 💜

My mom reads everything my sister and I publish. Even if it’s not her genre. My late dad, when I told him I was going to study art, said “how are you going to make a living?” He was incredibly proud though, when I was working as a sign maker at the old Nut Tree, then a production artist, and then a book designer.

I’ve been writing professionally for almost 50 years and have traditionally published just as many books. One BIG lesson I learned early on was don’t disclose your story ideas, especially in the early stages. Story concepts are fragile, like tiny seeds sprouting and taking shape. The slightest criticism could throw me off, too. Protect your ideas and blow off the nay sayers. You will always prove them wrong.
