I sell stickers and people frequently ask me “did you draw all of these?” Which is funny because my Instagram is mostly Timelapse vids of my drawing process 😅

Yep. 100% been there too. I’m a printmaker and illustrator so my work is all original. It’s wild when people ask where I bought my prints to turn around and sell at a fair or market. We usually end up staring at each other in a polite “WTF is happening right now??!?” moment. I dropped one fair from my show schedule b/c a woman vigorously argued with me that I couldn’t possible have “drawn all this.” Not my audience by a long shot. 😂

I think you just made me realize why my mother-in-law is always so snarky about handmade gifts--idiocy. Woman has zero hobbies. My girls are super creative, and she's always acted like Walmart would be a better plan.

Same! Them: These are cool! Me: thank you, it’s all hand painted! Them: how did you stick it on? Do you use heat transfer? Me: it’s all hand painted Them: it’s painted? Me: Yeah, I paint it all myself! Them: oh! Even with a hand painted sign people seem to think it’s printed somehow 😅

I sell at a makers market where everything has to be made by the vendor within that country. I am always asked “who makes these for you” I now work on a project at the market as a shortcut to answering this question. Also a good way to start conversations and keep myself busy whilst people are browsing.

Here’s what I find so hilarious about this. I am a product designer so I just hand in drawings and spec sheets. I don’t make any of the things I design. I get samples and they are made from a variety of things; fabric, ceramic, wood, glass etc. I find it almost impossible to get people to understand that I don’t make any of it. Even after explaining it over and over to a person they will walk away having purchased something at a sample sale saying “I love handmade things” SMH 😂

Maybe she thought you didn't make the original moulds. I know some people just buy them

You put so much time and effort into creating intricate pieces only for them to make you feel like your work is minuscule. I bead earrings.

As someone who crochets and sells her items for way less than the time it took to make it, can I just say that people do not appreciate the work that goes into our handmade items. The items I make take me at least 2 hours to crochet. I charge $8.00 each for them. That's $4.00/hr. I do it for the love of crocheting. Obviously.

At a show… Him: oh you sell for Juniper Jane? Me: I *am* Juniper Jane. I made all of this. Him: Right, but where did you buy the earrings from? Me: I made them. Him: No, I mean where did you get them from? 🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️ The moon, Sir. I bought them on the moon.
