Recently, I’ve been hearing tourists talk about the ‘real Japan,’ which implies the existence of a fake or non-real Japan. I have never heard Japanese people talking like this. Granted, I have been to some places worldwide that have seemingly been created mostly or entirely for foreign tourists, but in Japan? Even Kyoto, which can be very touristy, was obviously not created for tourists and is home to about 1.5 million people who mostly don’t work in the tourist industry.
