I wanted to utilize this space to not only bring the stories themselves back to our consciousness, but to also give the enslaved a nuance that shows that we have always been storytellers who were able to formulate narratives as ways to remember and get through the reality presented to us. I was able to find and read some of Zora Neele Hurston’s work, and began to figure out a way of creating a production showing High John The Conquer.
