I raised my disabled brother through his adult life and often travelled to spend Xmas with him. It is amazing how much Christmas brightness can be lovely without a tree. Make some other lovely focal point, with greens, lights, red ribbons. The trees are super expensive this year. It sounds sad to be ending a tradition, but in fact you could set up a smaller tree next year. I did that after not having one a couple of years. Good luck!
