You may not know this, but before Etsy was a publicly traded company they had a barter system built in to the platform so artists could trade. They also had a marketplace where you could post what you were looking for and get pitches from artists and makers. The front page of Etsy was a user-made collage that changed every hour, and were chosen from a “Treasury” of user curated collage gross of gorgeous products. It encouraged absolutely stunning product photography and community.

I made a couple of curated collages that made it to the front page. So fun.

I loved making treasuries! It was like the rabbit-hole of Pinterest, but there was a goal. I miss the real Etsy.

I miss that version of Etsy. It felt like an actual community. They even featured sellers on the front page on their birthday.

Those were the good days of Etsy, when Rob Kalin was still a part of it and people that worked at Etsy cared about innovation. There was a way to browse other member's favorite shops and favorite items. It was easy to pull up all items by local shops and buy from and find out about other local artists in your area. Treasuries were such a great feature. I got several featured on the front page over the years. Sometimes other shops reciprocated. It really did foster community back then.

Ooooh yes! I'll just add to the sentiment cause I remember that and I had a shop there for years. I recently looked up changing my bigcartel shop there and was surprised to know we now pay to open a shop and how different things are! It's sad but until something new comes along that feels like that, it won't be as fun anymore.

Whoa, had no idea about this. The first two are goals of mine. I guess that side of the business wasn't profitable enough for them.
