Here’s a thin slice of NYC life from the 1990s.
All of a sudden, these people started selling sweaters on the subway. I eventually gathered that they were from Peru. The sweaters were huge, thick, and frankly a bit ungainly, but tgey looked like the kind of sweaters white people wore in front of fireplaces at ski lodges, so at first I passed. It must have gotten cold one day when I had cash on me, because I found out that they wanted TWENTY US DOLLARS. Even in 1990s money, that was a bargain.
