I feel you. What comes before having allies? Acquaintances and Associates. Then you got what's called an Adversary, which is not an enemy. An Adversary is more-so competition that pushes to the next level.

Friend… ally. Same difference until shit hits the fan. An ally will always protect their best interest and requires mutual investment but a freind is ride or die no matter what.
