Intake/output (I/O) values in the ICU can often be misleading.
While fluid intake is typically well-documented, outputs like urine can be inaccurately measured due to human error or device malfunction.
More importantly, insensible losses (e.g., evaporation from the skin, respiratory water loss) aren’t captured at all! And daily weighs can be error-prone too.
Integrate clinical context, physical exam, and lab trends when evaluating fluid status - not just the numbers in the EHR! MedThreads
