Couple weeks ago I posted an extremely polarizing tale of a male student refusing to refer to me as Dr. [last name] and instead addressing me as Ms. I noted that my male colleagues rarely had students referring to them as Mr. Today, my student let out a singsong-y “byeee teacher” as he walked past me and his friends gasped and corrected him “dude, it’s professor!” Anyhow, as an academic, I’m a big fan of peer review.

No lie, my dream retort would be misgendering him and say if he doesn't want to respect my labels, I won't respect his. But I wouldn't want to trigger anyone else's dysphoria, so that would remain a dream scenario.

Wait so because he refers to you as a woman, that you are, you're going to make him fail your class or expel him from your class? As some comments say. If that's true, that speaks more about you than him...

I suggest you make a clear announcement at the start of class that students will address you as Dr. in class. I usually don’t use my title that way, but I would not hesitate in this case. You earned the title and you can use it.

As a PhD with extensive university teaching experience of undergrad and grad education majors: I never much cared if students used "Dr" with me. "Ms" was fine. But if they were disrespectful in any way (rare occasion), I was clear that this was my classroom & I didn't tolerate disrespect. I also indicated that while I could teach knowledge & skills, I could not teach dispositions required of teachers. So they could either begin to demonstrate appropriate behavior now or withdraw from my course.

Is it an actual rule the students must address you as Dr. or professor? Is it disrupting the learning environment for other students? If the answer to those questions is no, then your ego might be the actual student in need of a lesson 🤷🏾‍♂️

Back in the mid-80s, a group of UC Santa Barbara students and I visited our professor’s office to discuss the details of a project she had assigned. During the conversation, one of the male students addressed her as "Mrs. Gallagher" instead of "Dr. Gallagher." I still remember my face turning red with embarrassment. Another student quickly stepped in, hissing, “Hey man, it’s *Professor* Gallagher!” It was a great moment.
