I just started Jiu Jitsu, what’s something you wish you would have learned sooner than later as a white belt?

Frames hold, they don't push. It's always easier to move you than to move your partner.

I did it from the start, but I think not enough people give this advice... If you train in the Gi, wash your belt! It's fine to replace lost stripes if they come off in the wash! https://youtu.be/JlEJvLLo6Po?si=MHm9iJ0E9v5d34Ur

Focus on pin and submissions escapes because when you get started people will pin you and try to submit you very often; then after a year people start saying “wow you’re really hard to hold down” then “wow you’re getting harder to submit” creating comfort and calm in the worst situations gives you confidence in the other areas of BJJ as well :)

I have a whole IG page dedicated to this 🙌🏼 but here’s a few: 1. If you’re on top do not let people get the soles of their feet on you. 2. Always face your opponent 3. If you’re on bottom, pretty much never have both shoulders on the mat and keep your elbows and knees connected. Just a few concepts that if you can’t remember ANYTHING will help. 🫶🏼⚡️

1️⃣ BJJ is not like other training, and no matter how fit you are in other contexts, you'll feel tired & weak. EVERYONE asks, "What can I do on my off days to get more fit for this?" the answer is: REST. For a long while, you don't train *for* BJJ; BJJ *is the training.* 2️⃣ Rolling is a cooperative study session. Seek partners who help you learn, and maybe shy away from partners who put more emphasis on not getting tapped by a white belt.

In words of John Danaher: Learn how to escape first, then learn how to retain guard, and then half guard. From there you can do whatever you want but those 3 are fundamental, in that order.

Whenever I/you feel like saying “yes, I know how that works” ask a question instead.
