Live and from are too different things...I almost got into a verbal argument about this with someone in college...I was born and raised on the Westside of Chicago but moved to Oak Park as a teen...I was from Chicago but lived in Oak Park...he wanted to best me cause he lived in Bronzeville...He thought he was flexing because we were at school in Michigan...bro! I'm not going to have hood Olympics here at the University of Michigan!

Went to college in Indiana. Every other person there was from Chicago. After they said that, people would follow up with, "Which suburb?" No one was ever from the city proper. Yet no one was trying to being a jerk. I think it's more like when you go to the South and order a Coke and then they ask you what kind. 

Where I'm "from" and where I currently live are two different things. I'm born and raised on the Southside of Chicago, and aside from a couple of years on the Northside and out in Palos Hills, I lived the majority of my life on the southside. Now I live in Evanston, but I will always be from the southside.

When I don’t want to explain where Algonquin is in relation to anywhere else

I was born and raised in Chicago and now live in a burb "next door", I'd qualify as being "from" Chicago, I think.

Chicago gives an easier sense of place in a casual conversation while traveling. If the conversation continues and you aren't getting creeper vibes, you can start narrowing down your hometown.
