In NC, no. That was done during the driving phase of driver's ed and then handled with parents/guardian supervision once you got your permit. In NC now, they have a graduated license setup, where you are required to have so many hours of supervised driving to get a full unrestricted license, starting with a permit and school grades are monitored. Anything less than a C, your privilege is suspended until C or above is reported. It takes a minimum 18 months to go from permit to full license
