When I arrived in Philadelphia as a 20-year-old Dutch au pair in 1989, I had no idea what to expect. Meeting the two little girls I’d be taking care of, ages 4 and 6, was a whirlwind. They were shy for about an hour, and then suddenly, it was like we’d known each other forever—hugs and kisses! It felt a little awkward at first for sure, but very disarming, they were so sweet. 幾秒內	Nathalie de Wijngaert nathaliedew	...hugs weren’t really a thing. We just do the 3 kisses on the cheek thing. But these girls? They were pros at full-on hugs, and I had to get used to it. Funny enough, they converted me. Now, when I visit my family in Holland, I ditch the cheek kisses and go straight for a bear hug. I like to think I’m showing them what they’re missing, even if they look a little surprised. I kept a journal during that year, and I’ve got so many stories like this. Should I share more? 2/2

2 小時內	Maria Oliveira Lima marialima86	I am Brazilian. We hug, kiss, touch everyone in the family ever time we meet. Colleagues at the work, friends… and even customers/clients, sometimes. No sexual bias. I remember when I was a kid I used to kiss mom and dad in the morning, when leaving to school… and when getting back, and before going to bed. So… it is weird to notice that foreign people usually are awkward when hugging. They give “back-tapping-politician-like” hugs that seem to be artificial to us.

The smiles on their faces tell me everything I need for the day. And it doesn’t matter your skin color you are getting a big hug from me.
