I watched a night launch of Atlantis from US Hwy 1. It was about 15 km to the launch pad. So while we saw all the flames and smoke and the shuttle arc up into the night sky, it took about 45 seconds for the roar to reach us. In the meantime, all that explosive action took place to a soundtrack of croaking frogs. Unforgettable.
