trans folks, can I have a sanity check? I took a day off work and one of my coworkers, who is generally clueless, fielded a question from someone who wanted to know if it was ok that she directed a “man-looking” person (who had just introduced herself as Cindy) who asked for the ladies room to the men’s room. Coworker says she should have directed her to the gender neutral restroom in a separate wing of the hospital instead. My guidance, which overruled my colleague’s is that you direct

How would you react if someone sent you to another part of the building to use a gender-neutral restroom when that’s not what you asked for? It’s rude, right?

As long as there may be people in either bathroom uncomfortable with a trans individual, and a gender neutral bathroom is available, I don't see why you wouldn't accommodate everyone's needs without any sacrifice simply by directing the person to that neutral bathroom. It's not like you'd be sending them to the "wrong" bathroom, it's neutral after all. You'd simply be taking into consideration that some people may feel uncomfortable.
