Anon post: Would it be reasonable to ask teaching staff to supervise a 15-minute lunch duty? They currently have a full hour for their break. The goal is to ease the pressure during the challenging 'swap-over' times.

I taught 33 years and NEVER had an hour for lunch! This is too funny for teachers to read….

In Victoria there is no limit on supervision time for teachers. I remember a year where I did 7 per week. We were meant to get a minimum of 30 minutes for lunch but the the break was 50 minutes half of which was supervision time. So 25 minutes to get back to your desk, eat, visit the loo etc. things I don’t miss.

In Ontario,Canada this is the norm. But we rotate around so it’s not necessarily daily and still have enough prep time to have a decent “lunch”

I’m over here with my 23 minute lunch feeling so happy that teachers somewhere get an hour lunch break. That’s amazing!

That one hour break likely includes helping a student with something, getting supplies for an afternoon lesson, answering a parent via phone or email, etc. And eating their lunch and restroom.

We only have 40mins. Didn’t even finish my soup today after consoling a cover teacher who’d had a horrific cover lesson 😭 (secondary)

No, it is not reasonable. At all. Stop making us work for free!

I have lunch duty every Monday. I have a 50 minute plan period each day. I have a 20 minute morning duty each week. And I still work outside my contract hours, unpaid. We don’t have unions where I’m at. We have teacher organizations but that’s it. In my state, it’s not the law for us to have a duty free lunch. 🤷🏼♀️ It’s just “what we do”.

Where I teach we have a 30-minute lunch break and a 45-minute planning period. Assuming we aren’t called to cover a class because we can’t find enough subs.
