I saw video recently of a girl explaining how herself and most of the people in her circle (being millennials) who own a home, all got help from family members. So, I’m curious, millennials! Did you get financial help from family to be able to buy a home?

We used the first time home buyer program for a reduced down payment, and then got the down payment and closing costs we did owe by borrowing against our 401k. It took us exactly 1 year to pay ourselves back and catch the account back up to where it should be.

For the year prior to that, my kids and I lived rent free with my parents while I paid off debt (from divorce) so I could afford the house/improve my credit. So family didn’t physically hand me cash, but saved me money so I could make it happen.
