My 9 yo just taught me “Iroquois” was a derogatory name given to the Haudenosaunee Native American tribe by its enemies and adopted by the French and persisted to this day. I wonder if this is common knowledge and just a failure of my own elementary education. Glad to learn new things from my kids though.

一小時內	Joy Hernandez joythestampede	I read somewhere that Des Moines, like the capital of Iowa, is named for the river. The river is named for the tribe that lived there. Well. Sorta. The French asked the Peoria who those people were that lived over there. The Peoria didn’t like them much so they basically called them “the shit heads” but in the Peoria’s language, which to the French sounded like Des Moines.
10 小時內	David Hughes peidave	I think "Native American" may be an issue. In Canada it's First Nations since they predate America. Also I'm pretty sure every nation on Earth has derogatory names for other nations, especially a neighbour. Canadians call people from the USA Yanks. It's not necessarily a derogatory term but how it's used can be.
