In Malaysia we call people like myself a banana 🍌 A Chinese person who knows nothing of their own mother tongue. It’s not something I’m proud of for sure. Was it ignorance as a child? Likely. I often got mocked for sounding funny when I try to say something in Mandarin. Kids used to diss me in Mandarin in hopes that I couldn’t understand them fully. I guess the trauma sits there to this day, so I was never bothered to pick it up.
