By law, everyone is eligible for COBRA coverage, which allows you to continue your current ins policy for at least 18 months w/ no gap. Dependents may be able to extend for up to 36 months. Without the employer contribution, it will cost more, but you’ll have time to sign up for an ACA plan or wait for a new employer-sponsored plan.

Another thing I've noticed w/ employer-based insurance is that the (small number of) folks who have actually, very good coverage (used to be called "Cadillac insurance") through their jobs have often accepted lower salaries in exchange. My mom is a public school teacher in WV; the pay was awful, but our insurance was so amazing I didn't understand the full gravity of the crisis until I aged out. Try if you can to make your start date / resignation date closer to the beginning of a month. Your employer can only terminate you at the end of a month. Your new employer then adds you at the beginning of the next month. May cut down COBRA to 2 months instead of 3. Depends on the employer, but they may be able to start your health insurance sooner ( depends on how they structured their contract or if they can adjust a hire date) or negotiate cost of COBRA as sign on bonus.

Yes to all of this. Even when I was a child, I never understood why it was tied to our jobs. This was watching my mother work at a job. She was miserable, but had to keep as she was diabetic and needed two types of insulin to survive.  Before she passed she was trying to get a pump, but it kept getting denied. 

Another issue with employer insurance; the only hospital (highly regarded) in my hometown stopped accepting the insurance coverage from the major employer which is a Fortune 500 company. The hospital has been losing a ton of money because of denials on all kinds of service. The citizens health insurance is now considered out-of-network which will cost them big time. Healthcare providers can no longer take the financial hardship. Just one more way insurance companies are killing off Americans.
