13 yo refuses to eat before school. I get it, I’m not a breakfast person either. But then she’s complaining about being dizzy and nauseous at school. How to deal with a stubborn middle school kid???

Send a protein bar or something she can keep in her backpack to eat later?

There’s this powder thing you can mix into milk and shake. Comes in a yellow box. No idea what it’s called. Has three flavors - vanilla, strawberry, chocolate. You can buy them in individual flavors or in a mixed variety. They also come premixed in little cartons but it’s cheaper with the powder packets. Get a protein shake bottle with the little shakey ball- it greatly helps with the mixing & doesn’t leave powder all over. Another option could be a broth, maybe? Source: i still drink them lol

Snacks? Idk her school's policy on eating during class (we weren't allowed any food until high school, and even then that was teacher dependent) but a granola bar and a banana should hold her until lunch

Honestly, that could be a sign of anemia, which I have. Get her checked out, please.

I was trying to figure out where you're from Kate. In the UK we have milkshakes with extra protein in, most supermarkets carry them. 15g to 25g of protein and they really nice, should tide her over until lunch. I get the Aldi ones and the Pro Milk brand as well. If you're not in the UK there might be an equivalent locally. Sometimes it's much easier to down a cold milkshake than eat a meal.

Maybe don’t jump to calling her a stubborn middle school kid everytime something doesn’t go YOUR way. Keep in mind she is her own person! She is not you and he body isn’t wired the way you are. Maybe ask her why she feels like she can’t eat and what you can do to fix it. Instead of being mad at her. When your doctors medication doesn’t work do you assume it’s bc they are stubborn or not doing their job? No so why hold your child to such a high standard. This is a kid it’s their first time living

I’m not a “breakfast person;” never have been. I was always dizzy, sick before lunch. The issue was resolved when I started eating sandwiches for breakfast rather than breakfast foods (eggs, toast, cereal, etc). Maybe the kiddo just needs other meal options. Protein bars, fruit, gummies, crackers, even chips.

Can she have snacks at school? Send a granola bar or something quick she can eat after her first class. Also consider if she’s trying to tell you something? This is often the age when ED behaviors and body image issues start. If she’s struggling to eat because of anything like that, this could be her way of subtly asking for help.

Put a chocolate bar in her school bag. She can eat when she’s light headed.
