I only recently realised that the North fought the South over slavery, not because it was wrong… but because it gave the South an economic advantage! Crazy eh?

The roots of the Civil War are in the Missouri Compromise of 1820 which set a "standard" if you will, that for every free state admitted to the Union, a slave state would also be admitted maintaining the political balance in Congress. It all fell apart with the Kansas Nebraska Compromise of 1857 which led to the Dred Scott v Sanford Supreme Court ruling.

It was about the same thing that the Revolutionary war was fought for. People miles away from a group of people who were keeping the country going and working, telling the how to run things and not knowing how it should be done.

States rights over federalism. South was ready to secede becuase of Washington’s interference in states workings. Yes slavery is the short answer but it is not the long one. To this day we still live in a country that looks to Washington to solve problems which us not how the founders drew up the constitution.

The war was actually fought because the north attacked the south. The North wanted a united Union whereas the south was willing to separate because of slavery and other issues.
