The name of the country is “United States of America.” We can say “America” when referring to the country and its people and it doesn’t negate that the entire continent is called “America” as well. But let’s be real, the continent is most often referred by its regional subdivisions and not as a whole. Anyone who gets angry at Americans using the term to refer to the country and its citizens is most likely not from here.
