Just need to vent about this into the void! I was at an event yesterday with my fiancee and someone asked about a dog they saw, wondering the breed. I responded oh, it’s a Klee Klai, took my free sample of cider and went on. So we go to leave the event, the same lady ask, “how did you know that dog breed? You can’t casually give me that information and leave” So I respond: “I’m autistic, dog breeds are my special interest, I read a dog breed book everyday for six years, I love dogs!” 1/🧵

I continue telling her about how they are a member for the spitz family, telling her other spitz dogs, just info dumping at this point. So I stop to take a breath and this women has the caucasity (mix of Caucasian and audacity) to say to me, an autistic person, “you’re supposed to say person with autism instead of autistic person” 2/🧵

It was a moment that unfortunately came from miseducation, and shows jsut how much we as a society don’t listen to autistic folks! She was open to hearing what I had to say and didn’t get defensive but for everyone of these types of people I encounter I have 15 negative encounters! I’m glad this one ended with her thanking us for the information, both about autism and dogs, but all to say my fiancee and I (and other autistics should not have to educate always!) /end 🧵ActuallyAutistic

We are being pushed in healthcare to say things this way. Person with diabetes, person with hypertension, etc. Most of us think it is dumb.

It’s like people who don’t like “neuro spicy.” Okay, then don’t use it. But if I want to call myself that (because I am), that’s my choice.

I literally just saw a reel with a guy and his “auntie” (him in a wig) where “she” says something about being disabled, he says “auntie, you’re supposed to say differently abled,” and “she” goes OFF about “Are you telling ME, a disabled person, how I myself am allowed to identify?” And I am now going to use that comeback forever in these situations. ❤️ 1/2
