Actual conversation I just had with my landlord lady. Important: I'm Autistic and have been in a wheelchair for the past 4 years, since I had my second of four cancer related surgeries. I have been cancer free for 2+ years now. Landlord: The gate of the apartment complex has being open for 30 minutes. How dare you! We are going to get rob! Me: My best friend was helping me to get into the parking lot, and then into my apartment, and then bringing the groceries and her stuff 1/3

Because there is no ramp to get from the street to the parking lot, and from the parking lot to get into my apartment, it takes a while to get me in. We were keeping an eye so nobody could get it. Landlord: you are so irresponsable! I'm going to change the gate configuration so you can't use your control remote to open and close it! *I finally had enough, so I go on the offensive* Me: If you do that, I will have to suit you because there is NO way I can't get into the apartment complex 2/3

One phone call from you could cost the landlord anywhere from $10k to $10m 😂 as a former property manager, myself, and former paraeducator, I hope you do make some calls. You deserve ramps everywhere you need them. This isn't special treatment... it's basic equity and you're entitled to that.

Well doesn’t she sound like a ray of sunshine! So glad there as so many people both validating your response and giving you some good advice. Good luck with this. I hope you will post your updates on this once you are legally able to. You got this. 👌

I lived in a building that didn't have any apartments without stair access. My daughter was in a horrific accident and was in a wheelchair for several months. I had to get a lawyer to help me be able to move so we could get her in and out of our residence. They fought tooth and nail to try to make us pay out the lease. They told us they even charged the estate of a resident 11 months if rent bc she died a month after renewing. 🤬

You can file a complaint at the link below. There should also be a state level option for you and possibly a local level depending on your area. You shouldn't be out attorney fees to exercise your rights. https://www.hud.gov/program_offices/fair_housing_equal_opp/online-complaint

I’m glad you’re going to take legal action. You deserve to live equitably with your neighbors. Wishing you the best -
