If you think that's complicated, spend 10 minutes learning about computer graphics. And I don't mean this to be condescending or dismissive of your point here at all What I'm getting at is that ALL of the math, the design, the programming, the hardware behind making the game render WITHOUT the 'portal' mechanic is so unbelievably complex that you could spend lifetimes studying it And someone can build cool portal mechanics on top of that, too 😁

I feel like people who say “have you played portal?” Don’t realize that portal was an entirely different type of game from this, it wasn’t an online multiplayer PvP game with a hundred projectiles per second playing around the map.

I know it's been said with varying levels of snark but if you think this is cool check out the portal franchise, the puzzles, the physics using the portals, and story telling is truly a work of art

Computers don't care about 3D space. It's all object oriented programming. The camera view changes depending on your own vector to the portal.

It’s very polished too, there have been some weird interactions with stuff like punisher’s portal being on top of a horizontal portal but not bugs I’ve encountered with it yet. I’m amazed

Think about the concept first, not the volume. The concept of a portal is basically a window. 1st to another instanced level. Could view it as a loading screen but without the loading, instant. Then change the "another instance" to the very same instance, just another coordinate. A "ipen teleport". From then on it turns just a matter of math, geometry and physics, but even not so complex as light or fluid physics. In reality it would mean tearing the space, but in virtual world it's possible. 1
