Make sure that the WiFi isn't on at home and that he doesn't have a tv or games console in his room. Not pay for anything he wants - he wants something he earns the money for it. No phone etc. He wants to be an adult, he can have adult responsibilities.

Has she tried having a deeper conversation about possible triggers? Does the school district offer alternative learning opportunities? Has she spoken to his counselors and or a school psychologist? Is she financially able to pay for a possible private education program, not sure if it’s readily accessible everywhere but there’s a school locally I was considering switching my oldest to that does one on one sessions in a tutoring like center but you earn a high school diploma.

Nothing. I’d let the natural consequences take over. Here, 16 yr olds are charged with truancy (not the parent) and lose their driver’s license in addition to the fine. That kid would also be living like an Amish person. No phone/internet/allowance. This kid knows all the “buzzwords” to play victim. I’d not be playing.

PS my 13 year old didnt want to go to school. I let her stay home. That year she discovered she loved playing the harp, she read tons of books, wrote a novel, never got sick, spent tons of time outside in nature, and became self-aware. The next year, she wanted to go back to school because she missed her friends.
