One time during med school, we had to re-certify our income for SNAP benefits. We’d done this dozens of times & had no changes that should impact our eligibility. Somehow though, there was a clerical error on their end & they changed our head of household to our 18 month old son 😩🤦‍♀️ They refused to correct this error without permission from our head of household. We spent hours on the phone explaining why this was not possible, but alas, rules are rules. Exasperated beyond belief… 🧵

my husband finally said, “Fine, sure lady, you can talk to E, here he is.” He handed the phone to our very chatty 18 month old who had been working very hard in speech therapy over the last year. He spoke English, but it didn’t sound like it ha ha. This lady actually attempted to ask our BABY about authorizing his FATHER to be the head of household. I think about this a lot from a leadership/training perspective. Who failed her? What are rules without the wisdom to enforce them?

SNAP does this on purpose and nobody can convince me otherwise. They "lose paperwork", send cases to cities people dont even live in, misread paperwork and generally f*ck around with people to delay giving them benefits as long as possible. Its cruel. Even if its just down to earth incompetence ...its cruel.

When my father in law died I had to close his bank accounts but one insisted on him coming in personally so I offered to dig up his remains! Went in there in person and was dealt with in ten minutes

I am a twin. Just after we turned 18 my brother and I received a letter from Social Security. We realized we both had the same SSN. We had to go in to their office and sit in front of a person to confirm that we are not the same person. We sat down, looked at the guy behind the desk and said, now what. "You're done" was his reply. That was it.

It's " With this job, you don't have to think outside of the box." mentality. because when my family and I were getting help every month that I got a 3rd paycheck we'd have to recertify all over again!

When I turned 18, I had to go to my local Post Office with my birth certificate and driver’s license to prove that I was not a male and therefore didn’t need to register for the draft.

I was 49 when I discovered my last name was misspelled on my birth certificate. I’ve made it through every bureaucratic function that required a birth certificate and no one ever caught it. Now I have to send my dad’s birth and death certificate to prove how my name should be spelled.

When I worked on food stamps cases I was required to ask people if anyone on the case was a felon who had escaped from jail or violating parole, even if it was just a single mother with a bunch of kids. It was fucking ridiculous, but it was policy and we could get in trouble for not asking.

What year and what state was this because our system literally doesn't allow us to designate a person under age 18 as HoH....

They made a clerical error for my student snap and it reported as I made 7,000 a month. Mind you I applied and uploaded the same kind of paystubs I always do but some how they would not believe they made the error and I had to do an entire fair hearing and the judge said the information was correct. Yet an ILLEGAL migrant can have thousands in food stops without having to upload or fight for anything …
