Where I live some local yarn shops will take it. One has a shelf and once a week they have a coffee and knit/crochet day and people can use the yarn to make scarves and hats for people homeless people or even just people who need them.

Senior centers always love yarn donations.

Some Goodwill stores even sell yarn on Ebay. I have purchased some lovely discontinued yarn for great prices.
