The destruction of the ring isn’t the end, it’s the beginning. The journey itself and the choices made have meaningful consequences for the main characters. We only get a couple of these in the movie, but Tolkien’s not done when Frodo gets to Mt Doom or even when the ring is destroyed. If asked today who the main character is in LotR, I’d answer “the fellowship”
