I have a hot take, I'm not sorry about it, and I will perish upon this hill: The original "Hurt" by Nine Inch Nails is better than the Johnny Cash version.

NIN's version makes me want to give Reznor a rusty razor blade and tell him to finally get it over with. It was the whiniest song ever produced. Johnny Cash is the *only* reason it's good.

Which version did they choose for a key series moment on Rick & Morty? Exactly.

Dude, even TRENT REZNOR says Johnny Cash's version is better!

Trent Reznor would disagree with you.

Burning hot take - both versions are bad. It's a bad song. Self-pitying. Maudlin. Dreary. It was a canny choice by Cash to record it because it's the kind of song his target audience for those recordings love. And that's because they are ponderous, humourless "real music" bros.

No one who’s seen NIN do this live would argue with you.

Each different. Both genius. Cash, was singing about his life and the end of his journey, thru the words of Trent Reznor. Trent was singing about his struggles and journey in his early career.

Not hot at all — musically superior in every way. Cash’s (Rubin’s) version omits the guitar dissonance, omits the octave shift in the refrain, and omits the surprise major third scale degree at the end of the refrain. Rubin’s version is sanitized and boring. I can’t understand why Eddie Vedder patterns his version on Rubin’s.
