I have Ashkenazi dna. I know where it comes from. I also know why my family is not Jewish, my ancestors fled during the pogroms. Only the UK was also pretty antisemitic. The trail goes as far as my grandfather, who changed his name in 1939, thus erasing what was left of his heritage.
