Yup. Lots of black and mixed familes in the south would say Cherokee instead of black to cover their racial heritage. If mom was “cherokee” then the kids weren’t enslaved and didn’t fall victim to the one drop rule as harshly

This happened in my background. In the 1830s my g4grandfather set up house with one of my g5grandfather's slave women. I assume she was biracial, because of the 9 kids they had, those who appeared "more white" passed themselves off as Cherokee. Also, after all this time, my base makeup is for caucasian, but the undertone allows me (and my sister) to wear eye, cheek, and lip makeup for light skinned women of color. We can't wear corals or pinks, must be brown base. We tan really easily, too.
