Here they advertise affordable apartments, then charge a fee to apply. Many apartments never get rented, because landlords make more money from the fees than they would rent, and no tenants to deal with!

Yeah, we have people making $10 an hour at Walmart but landlords want $75 per adult app fee and paid background checks. That's a full day's wages per adult, plus multiple people applying for not enough places. Thankful that I have a decent enough income to have buying as an option.

This is false. Application fees can only be charged to cover the cost of a credit or background check and in many states there are limits to what you can charge. For example, in NY the application fee is limited to $20 but background and credit checks typically cost $30-50 so landlords can actually lose money with multiple applications.
