Here they advertise affordable apartments, then charge a fee to apply. Many apartments never get rented, because landlords make more money from the fees than they would rent, and no tenants to deal with!

That's a full day's wages per adult, plus multiple people applying for not enough places. Thankful that I have a decent enough income to have buying as an option.

For example, in NY the application fee is limited to $20 but background and credit checks typically cost $30-50 so landlords can actually lose money with multiple applications.
