As she was about to discover. When she looked up the entire class was beside ourselves with grief. Most openly weeping, some with their faces buried in their arms on their desks, some of the boys hiding inside their shirts, all of us wracked with sobs. She tried to comfort us but we were past comforting. She paged the office for reinforcements. Somehow she and the secretary got us to the gasping & sniffling stage, then took us to the water fountain and out for a bonus recess. 2/?

We read that book in 3rd grade too. Although my teacher was the complete opposite of gentle. Great book but the emotional toll it has is awful. Don’t remember why we read it or how she phrased it so it wasn’t too damaging on us.

1000 Paper Cranes is on the third grade reading list for numerous reading programs. People die, it is a reality. The book teaches about a time in history, compassion, friendship, family and death. Many children’s books have a character who dies. Death is a fact of life. It is foolish to think that children need to be shielded. Rignow students across the USA, live with the reality of lockdown drills. Far more disturbing than a character who dies in a book.

Same. Except our teacher was a first year teacher and had a teaching assistant in the classroom to help. She was shocked at first but eventually helped us express why we’re so upset. We had a student at the school the year before have leukemia, he was still in treatment. We thought she was trying to tell us he died. She had no idea since this was her first year. She taught us how to make the cranes the next day. 😮‍💨 Rough day.

We read it in year 3 in Australia… I have a copy now decades later and my daughter took it in school in year 6 when they were learning about world war 2… the teacher had never heard of the book and loved it. Its a gentle book written about an horrific situation… it’s important..

I remember having both Bridge to Terebithia and Where the Red Fern Grows as read aloud books in my 5th grade year. I literally could not tell you a single other book we read out loud in any grade ever.
