At least 2 decades old.

Technology doesn't get adopted because it's neat, it gets adopted because it's useful. VR is not useful outside of a small handful of niches

We are still waiting for the iPhone moment for VR. When it all clicks.

I think the biggest use of VR is in covert government surveillance and voyeurism. Many people involved with various parts of the national security state have access to the real time 3D live stream that is going on in which they can see everybody in their homes and apartments and even see you naked. The technology for the imaging is called Wifi sensing and they also use AI to add color and photorealistic rendering to the video feed. Ok, so as some have pointed out...more like 30 years old...early VR systems launched in the mid 90s. Second...cost of entry Vs actually immersion...early VR was pioneering for it's time, but nothing like people hoped. However, something else nobody has really said is eyesight...lots of people require vision correction and VR headsets rarely accommodate glasses. So you need contacts or LASEK before you can partake if you are short sighted.

It’s expensive & uncomfortable. People will adopt it if and when those issues are overcome

I absolutely love VR (Q3) and use it on average two hours per day. My VR friends and I feel pretty shocked that it hasn’t caught on more tbh. We’ll see…
