As a person who has a deep and heartfelt interest in morals, ethics, and doing the right thing, my answer to this is: BS. You have no ethical responsibility to make up for the moral lapses of your neighbor. It may have been the kind, expedient, or helpful thing to do, but that by no means makes it the de facto RIGHT thing.
