As a puertorican, I'm blown away by that. We attach really strongly to our family names. We keep maternal and paternal last names, and we're huge on ancestry. It's left over from Spanish rule, a great sense of pride in knowing your family's past. As an adult, my older sister and I have taken a deep dive into our Ancestry. We've found historic pictures of family members and gone back until the 1700s. We feel strangely close to our predecessors. It's like we're intimate strangers.
