I strongly believe that this is directly connected to the fact the we as a country fell in love with anti-heros in the 80s and 90s. This is why I hate "Thanos was right." Also I believe that this is an unintended consequence of the right changing their strategies in late 70s and early 80s. They didn't expect it to work this was but figured it out and leaned into in 00s.
