I responded: “Phew, me too! That was scary. But the good news is we’re safe and sound now.” In that moment, I realized how important it was to: 1. Name the emotion. 2. Normalize it. 3. Reassure him that we are safe. The emotions melted pretty quickly afterwards. Sometimes, it really can be that simple.
