Asking for fantasy novel recommendations with “no spice” has not given me the results I want. I’m trying to avoid romantasy and books where romance is a heavy focus. I don’t mind there being people in the book who fall in love, I just don’t want to read a book that’s ABOUT that. I want a sword, not a boyfriend. Genuinely, what should I be asking for? How do I word this?

My recs: Name of the Wind, Green Rider, Night Angel, Innocent Mage, Justice of Kings, Shadow of the Gods, The Naming, Eragon, Dragon King trilogy, Arrows of the Queen, Sabriel, Assassin’s Apprentice. I think newer readers to the genre tend to blend trad fantasy with romantasy because it’s trending, so I could understand why you’re not getting the recs you’re hoping for.

I also love city of brass (first book tries to trick you into thinking it might turn into romantasy but it grows up a ton in books two and three, excellent political intrigue, world building and character development). I also recently started 5th season by nk jemisin and so far it’s been fantastic
