North Island. I was raised to respect and revere Tīkanga Māori(the Māori ways), and to always be proud of my heritage, where my people come from, and to respect my elders as my teachers. My whaea(mum) is Māori and my da is Scottish, but I am not considered 'half Māori', I am simply considered Māori because that is what I am. Trying to define indigeniety by skin tone is such a colonizer way of thinking. In Canada, the blood quantum laws are used to deny Indigenous rights to people who don't present "Indigenous enough." It's cruel and disgusting. There's also a law that if your mother was unmarried when you were born, you can be denied a status card. It's really horrific.
