A commentor asked me the other day how I can say I'm Māori when I'm 'obviously a white woman', and I'd like to take a second to gently educate. Aotearoa New Zealand was colonised by the British and that means that many people there have indigenous heritage, and also present white. In Aotearoa New Zealand, we believe that if you whakapapa Māori(are of Māori heritage) then you are Māori, and your skin colour isn't even a factor.
