This is probably going to be a controversial take, but the idea of "knowing your roots" and "being proud of ethnic identity" just rubs me the wrong way. Maybe this is simply me speaking as someone who lives in a country where I am part of the ethnic majority and I acknowledge its perks but in my case I just don't like the idea of being forced to be proud of a country I didn't choose to be born in especially when I'm exposed to the more negative aspects of its culture on a daily basis.
